Arthroscopic knee surgery by Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Keith R. Johnson

One of the foremost practitioners in his field, Dr. Keith R. Johnson is widely recognized for his expertise in adult and adolescent arthroscopic knee surgery.  Dr. Keith performs multiple knee surgeries per week and focuses on implementing minimally invasive techniques to shorten recovery time for his patients.

What to expect after arthroscopic knee surgery:

After arthroscopic surgery, the small incisions on your knee will be protected with a large dressing and knee motion restrictor. In order to proactively reduce post-surgery pain, Dr. Johnson will usually put an anesthetic in your knee during the surgery itself. After the anesthetic wears off, it is not uncommon to experience discomfort in the knee. The pain can be managed with Ibuprofen and/or Tylenol with Codeine (tablets or liquid). The dosage varies based on the weight of the patient, but a prescription for the correct amount will be provided and should be filled prior to going home from the hospital.

About the knee:

The knee represents a complex system of joint movement. Cartilage (a smooth lining), ligaments (stretchable connective tissue), and muscles act together to help the two bones at the knee joint interact smoothly so that the leg can be straightened and bent. As the smooth lining or other parts of the knee wear or break down, the joint becomes stiff and movement becomes painful.

Minimally Invasive Hip Surgery by Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Keith R. Johnson

During your hip replacement (also called total hip arthroplasty), Dr. Keith R. Johnson will remove your damaged hip sections and replace them with specific materials based on your needs. This artificial joint (“prosthesis”) is designed to help you regain your function while reducing pain.

About Minimally Invasive Hip Surgery:

Over the last twenty years, the number of Americans having total hip replacements has doubled. Though most patients who undergo hip replacement procedures eventually walk again without pain or the aid of a cane, recovery and rehabilitation can be rigorous, painful, and lengthy. Dr. Johnson specializes in a technique known as the “Anterior Approach,” which is “truly minimally invasive.”

A 2011 study by the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery found that the anterior approach resulted in less muscle damage and inflammation compared to the traditional posterior approach, both in the immediate post-operative period and two days later. Using the anterior approach, Dr. Johnson can:

  • Take X-rays during the procedure to ensure proper hip alignment
  • Use a special operating table
  • Enter from the front of your body and only stretch the muscles aside, which avoids cutting and minimizes pain and recovery time

Rotator Cuff Repairs

One of Dr. Keith R. Johnson’s specialties is rotator cuff repairs.  If your rotator cuff is torn or injured, you may require surgery to repair it and restore functionality.  Dr. Johnson’s surgical techniques for this include arthroscopy, open surgery, or a combination of both. The goal of rotator cuff repair surgery is to help restore the function and flexibility of the shoulder and to relieve pain that cannot be controlled by other treatments.
